if i'm paying for a digital subscription, there's no reason why i should also have to look at ads.
i can see why there are ads for a print edition, due to printing costs, paper, and shipping, but none of those exist for a digital edition.
Magazines do not sell advertising to cover the costs of printing. They make the MAJORITY of their money through advertising. You'll often see mag subscriptions for really cheap online because they want to get the mags in as many hands as possible so they can brag to publishers about readership and charge more for ads.
I would guess the high price for iPad apps as more to do with the development costs than anything else.

Are you as old as Helen? Have you seen that she has seen?
Just because she speaks of Jewish influence in Washington, does not automatically make her anti-Semitic. Sorry to burst your self-created bubble.
Sounds like you just created a bubble yourself. Care to point out where I stated any of that? Or were you just making an assumption?
If you need to hear my opinion on the Jewish/ Israeli Lobby; Yes, I completely agree that it is a powerful force. However, that's not focus of the story.
There can be no question that undue influence (given the weight of Jewish voters) has been going on for years.
There can also be no question that one who reports the news needs to remain relatively objective. I could give a damn what she says in private but when one starts expressing their opinion in a profession such a journalism, you lose all credibility to report a story without undue bias.
Anti-Semitism is generally quite swiftly and harshly dealt with in this country (and rightly so). It's a shame such an attitude towards prejudice is not more evenly applied when it comes to other groups.
I think Israel deserves quite a lot of criticism, as does the pro-Israeli lobby. Criticism of these two entities is not tantamount to anti-Semitism. Also, much what Thomas says echoes sentiments being expressed accross the Middle East on a daily basis. She is Lebanese, and Israel's track record with Lebanon is pretty shameful. Right or wrong, this stuff is not necessarily coming out of the blue. With that being said, some of Thomas' statements and language came across as very reckless at best.
I completely agree.
I have no problem with her expressing her opinion/ point of view but with her (former) standing, she could probably wrangle a ton of op-ed space/ television interviews to voice her concerns in a tactful manner.

im hoping this quietly fixes the unresponsive home button issue.
I've been having problems with the home button on my iPhone, but figured it was just the hardware going bad. Perhaps not? Is this an issue many have been experiencing?
The trouble I experience is that sometimes when I double-click the home button, it takes me to the search screen rather than the multitasking bar. Other times when I double-click the home button (or even single-click it), it does nothing at all. Is that what you're also talking about?
And the biggest question of all does this update fix it?

Nokia is only enforcing the legal right to attempt to protect what they consider is misuse of their IP. Let them.
Why does everyone get their knickers in a bunch about this? If they have a case it'll be upheld, if they don't then the court will throw it out. Big deal. Blame litigation happy America if you have to.
EDIT: Oh and to people saying why has it taken so long to bring an action - these corporate matters can take a while to rumble through. Yes, commercial pressures do have an impact on when cases are brought - trust me, it happens an awful lot!

I am glad that at least in Europe this travesty daring to call itself beer will not be allowed to sully the name of Budweis. The true, real Budweiser (Budweiser Budvar Brewery) is actually a very tasty Lager unlike that deer piss Anheuser Busch sells in the US, which under the rules of the bavarian purity manifest isn't even beer at all.
Awesome.
Cheers,
Ahmed
Ugh, has to be one of the worst beers out there.
All beer sucks. That beer has been dressing itself up like wine for the last few decades or so is hysterical. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig. IMO, there's no difference between Budweiser and Chimay, except that Chimay manages to be even more disgusting. Don't even get me started on crap like Guinness. And before anyone says anything, I used to work in good restaurants for 20 years, I've had just about every beer you can think of- all of them are nasty. Beer is the only beverage that tastes even worse the more you pay. Hey- I tried it. :p:p:p:p
Beer is easily the worst alcoholic beverage on the face of the planet, right next to grappa.
Now now... this sounds more like a personel preference then fact. I can say the same about whiskey or scotch. Don't like the taste. I can say I have grown more custom to the darker beers. And comparing Budweiser which is a lager to Chimay which is a belgium ale is trully disrespectiful to the beer gods! :D
There are sooooo many different type of beers out there also. Just like there is of other types of alcohol.

Looking forward to an improved native turn by turn navigation app. IMO this is night and day the biggest advantage Android phones have over the iPhone. The turn by turn nagivation and voice integration of the Google maps navigation app on my Droid was absolutely amazing and the free iPhone apps pale in comparison. I haven't tried any of the paid navigation apps. What I'd really like is Google's navigation app on the iPhone but I'm assuming that will never happen. Hopefully this new app will be ready with iOS 5

my wife works for a company that deals a lot with Apple products and the code name for the "widescreen ipod" is the ipod dash
Yeah, yeah, right.
But if true the name suggests specific in-car functionality. For example: Bluetooth for a GPS receiver (or built in GPS), route finding software.
And why not? In car GPS route finders are now incorporating MP3 playing capabilities, streaming to the stereo via Bluetooth. It makes sense for Apple to integrate further functionality, when it is the right time, to the correct product.

Isn't Best Buy participating in the pre-ordering program on June 15th? Apple Stores are, as is AT&T. At both places, the phones will be ready for pickup on the 24th ---AT&T promises front-of-the-line, no waiting for pre-ordering customers. Of course, you have to pay for it when you order it, but. . .
**I thought u had to have it shipped to you if you pre-order and aren't guaranteed to get it by the 24th. Where did you hear you can have it shipped to the store and are guaranteed to have it that day in store?

if i'm paying for a digital subscription, there's no reason why i should also have to look at ads.
i can see why there are ads for a print edition, due to printing costs, paper, and shipping, but none of those exist for a digital edition.
It's the other way around - the cover price more or less covers the cost of paper et al, and the major revenue comes off advertising. Even if it costs only 1% of the paper price to create the e-version, the firm isn't going to accept $1 or $2 from your subscription in lieu of the maybe $3-5 it makes (per copy) from selling the ad space.

I concurr. Almost every concert I go to now, I see a MacBook on stage. I see mac notebooks everywhere. One thing I hate is when i see people dissuading potential buyers away from macintoshes, simply because Windows is the more common operating system, when most of the time, these are new computer buyers and wouldn't be able to use Wwindows in the first place.
Well it is an issue of Risk Manangement. Whie true most people will be better off with a Mac. If they don't know anything better, the PC seems like the safest choice, Just because the numbers show more PC are out there and if you go to CompUSA you get 6-7 iles of Windows Programs and a little corner with Mac Products (often at a higher price too  ). If they didn't like their Mac they are stuck with it. At least with the PC if it sucks you can use the programs you have on the Newer System (theroretically). It is hard to explain to them that OS X and iLife is equilvalnt to about $1000 of 3rd party software that you will need to get to match the quality, (not the crap that most PC come standard with) espectailly because all the feature seems to be there. iPhoto vs. Mr. Pic Foto softare, Mail vs. Outlook Express. But for someone new that is tough to explain. When they are computer savy enough they already have already invested into PC and PC Software so getting them to swich is hard too.
At least now with bootcamp you can go. Get a Mac if you really hate it after a few weeks we can put windows on it, and it will run that fine too.

So 1 in 20 people who have a cellphone have an iPhone. Not bad at all.
The amazing part is how many models the companies above them (and below them) are selling to get to where they are.

Why could it not have a secular constitution?
the main reason would be that neither palestinians nor israelis want a secular state

I'm back from San Francisco....
It was a great trip. Really good to meet up with you all.
Next year we'll have a more formal meeting set up.

Sorry, I missed you all. I had a very busy week. In conjunction with Macworld, I wanted to see SF and I went to visit Cupertino to visit Apple HQ. And I wanted to take advantage of everything the conference had to offer. Hope everyone had a good time and I already plan on being there next year.

What an incredibly misguided law. I can't believe a western country in the 21st century could not only have such a law, but instantiate and enforce!

Hi Guys,
I wanted to get your opinions on something.
Recently, Apple added a whole bunch of free online seminars on it's seminars page (you can get there from the Hot News page).
In a number of the seminar descriptions, they speak about the "awesome power" of the "Power Mac G5 Quad" (which is true), and they keep calling it "new" on more than one occasion (it's close to a year old now).
This is interested to me since there's speculation that the "Mac Pro" will be unveiled at the WWDC (hoping). The release of these seminars, and the fact that they promote the quad and call it "new", means that:
a) They're desperately trying to sell as many of these machines as possible because they haven't sold enough of them and before their Intel counterparts are released, and/or,
b) The new "Mac Pro" quad will not be coming out until the year end - perhaps only a mid-range "Mac Pro" will be unveiled @ the WWDC.
What do you guys think?
Regards,
Filmguy
Those seminars come up periodically. I think they're just on an automatic reload when it comes to the right time.
Apple won't give anything away before an event, especially not days before. The best leaks come a few hours before the event kicks off.
